How To Get Involved

Three pathways, one community. All application links are at the bottom of page for each program/opportunity!

Early Immersive (Underclassmen)

Aimed a new Gators, this pathway offers the most opportunities for leadership development and mentorship, to establish a strong foundation at UF.

Starting Strong

  • Freshman Year: Participate in Adelante! HSA’s pre-arrival program.

  • Attend the Hispanic-Latine Student Assembly (HLSA) event in August. This welcome assembly will provide a great overview of all the programs, affiliate organizations, and opportunities connected to HSA.

Get Involved

  • Freshman and/or Sophomore Year: Apply for the Member Leadership Program, a mentorship and leadership program for freshmen, sophomores, and first-year transfer students. Requires one year of commitment and active participation.

  • Join an affiliate organization! From culture-based organization to career focused groups, there is something for everyone to try. Some examples include MASA, CALOR, UEPA, ALPFA, and Sabor Latino.

Leadership Opportunities

  • After sophomore/freshman year: Apply to join HSA Cabinet.

  • If you completed MLP, you can apply to return to the program as a Director. With successful cabinet involvement, you can apply to join the executive board of HSA.

Relaxed Participation (Any Year)

Perfect for those with other time commitments or busier schedules, this pathway ensures you remain connected to the hispanic community at UF with flexibility.

  • Attend the Hispanic-Latine Student Assembly in August. Reconnect with friends, learn about other organizations tabling, and take part in one of the largest gatherings of hispanic/latine students at UF.

  • Attend HSA General Body Meetings (once per month). These meetings include important information about events and ongoing projects, while providing an opportunity to interact with fellow GBMers.

  • Join an affiliate, and attend their own set of events and activities. If time permits, join a committee such as History Buffs or Affiliate Ambassadors, which meet bi-weekly. Attend HSA socials and other events whenever possible. Feel free to spend time at Casita, where students gather for studying and socializing on Familia Fridays. Follow @hsa.uf on Instagram to stay up to date on all things HSA.

Involvement Anytime (Upperclassmen)

Aimed at older students without prior participation in HSA, this pathway provides opportunities to deepen their connection with the hispanic community while building upon past experiences.

  • Attend the Hispanic Latine Student Assembly (HLSA) event in August. Gain exposure to all of HSA’s partners and affiliates, and find areas to explore.

  • Attend HSA’s General Body Meetings (held 1x per month) to stay up-to-date on HSA’s events, projects, and initiatives.

  • Aim to be voter eligible, by earning points through active participation in HSA’s events such as Solidarity Sessions, Winter Formal, Noche de Gala & State of the Association.

  • Apply for leadership opportunities as an upperclassmen student. These include being a peer leader for Adelante, part of the Hispanic Latine Student Assembly (HLSA) team, part of the Hispanic-Latine Heritage Month Team, and/or a mentor for the Member Leadership Program (MLP). If possible, apply to be a part of HSA cabinet during your senior year at UF.

  • Join a committee. History Buffs or Affiliate Ambassadors are great ways of working more closely within HSA and contributing to important connections and projects.

  • Join an affiliate organization, such as MASA or ECHA, if not already done. Explore through cultural or career focused lens. Smaller groups also facilitate easier connections with people that have shared backgrounds or interests.

Note: These pathways are meant to be models of example involvement, not strict frameworks to follow. No matter your trajectory, there is a place for you in HSA.

Committees

History Buffs

Under the Office of Political Affairs (OPA), the History Buffs team works to preserve the Hispanic-Latine history at UF and Gainesville. In the past, we’ve partnered with local alumni, UF faculty, HSA affiliates, and university archives to document this history. This year, we’ll be building upon a document known as La Casita Report, which explores the origins of the Institute of Hispanic-Latino Cultures at UF.
